Dr. Joao Paulo Solar Vasconcelos is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a medical oncologist at BC Cancer – Vancouver Centre, specializing in gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr. Solar Vasconcelos completed his medical training in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, earning his medical degree in 2009 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). He pursued residency training in Internal Medicine (2010–2012) at Baleia Hospital/Benjamin Guimarães Foundation and further specialized in Medical Oncology (2012–2015) at the Mario Penna Institute. Additionally, he completed a Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology clinical and research fellowship at BC Cancer Vancouver/UBC Division of Medical Oncology (2022–2024) and earned a Master of Science (MSc) in Experimental Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He is a clinician investigator focused on biomarker development and clinical trials in gastrointestinal malignancies.

After graduating from University of Toronto medical school, Dr. Susan Ellard completed an internship and internal medicine degree, as well as medical oncology training in British Columbia, then a research fellowship in new drug development in Glasgow. She returned to be a founding member of the medical oncology department in Kelowna, and has practiced in breast, genitourinary, and gynecologic cancer throughout her career. Susan helped create the clinical trials team and program at BC Cancer Kelowna; has led many trials at her site; and remains a keenly engaged investigator, as well as working to advance exercise oncology and health promotion in the Interior. Susan has also participated in the Planetary Health Committee for BC Cancer since its inception. Since 2021 she has been Kelowna’s department leader for medical oncology.

Dr. Param Bains is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and a Medical Oncologist at BC Cancer – Kelowna. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, followed by her Medical Oncology fellowship at Dalhousie University. She completed a Subspecialty Fellowship in Genitourinary Malignancies at Guy’s and St. Thomas NHS Trust in London, UK. Her clinical practice focuses on patients with Genitourinary and Gynecologic malignancies.

Dr. Bourque joined BC Cancer Surrey in 2012 as a medical oncologist. She is the Executive Medical Director at BC Cancer Surrey. She previously held the role of director of clinical trials and department head for medical oncology. She is a clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Bourque primarily treats locally advanced breast cancer.

Dr. Angela Chan is a medical oncologist at BC Cancer Surrey and a Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Medicine. She obtained her medical degree from Queen’s University, completed internal medicine residency at the University of British Columbia, followed by medical oncology residency at BC Cancer. She specializes in the treatment of breast, lung, and skin malignancies. Dr. Chan is the former Systemic Therapy Chair of the BC Breast Cancer Tumor Group, is an Editorial Board member of the BC Cancer Drug Manual and serves on the BC Cancer Priorities and Evaluation Committee. She is actively involved with teaching having received numerous teaching awards from the UBC Department of Medicine. She participates in clinical trials research, has led numerous quality improvement initiatives and has a special interest in innovative health care delivery.

Dr. Theresa Chan has been a staff medical oncologist at BC Cancer (Surrey) since 2008, and is Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of British Columbia Department of Medicine. She completed her medical degree at the University of British Columbia and internal medicine training at Western University. She then returned to the University of British Columbia for medical oncology residency. Her clinical practice specializes in gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and breast malignancies. She participates in drug access and approvals, and currently serves as Systemic Therapy Chair of the BC Gastrointestinal Tumor Group. She is also involved in outpatient clinical teaching and served as Medical Oncology Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education Director (Surrey site) from 2010-2016.

Dr. Peixoto is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and a medical oncologist at BC Cancer, Vancouver Centre, specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. She completed her PhD in Oncology Universidade Nove de Julho, focusing on pancreatic cancer. She received her medical degree at Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas da Santa Casa de Sao Paulo in 2006, completed her Internal Medicine at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo and Medical Oncology Residency at Hospital Sirio Libanes, Sao Paulo, Brazil. She subsequently undertook a Gastrointestinal Oncology fellowship at BC Cancer- Vancouver from 2012 to 2014. Her research interests include molecular studies, outcomes-based research, and clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancers.

Dr. Fibich is a staff medical oncologist and hematologist at the Victoria Cancer Center. His clinical interest are treatment of hemato- lymphoid malignancies and stem cell transplantation, GI malignancies, in particular pancreatic cancer and clinical teaching.
Dr. Fibich received his training in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology at Hannover Medical school and Martin-Luther University in Halle/Germany followed by a bone marrow transplant fellowship at the TBCC in Calgary. He then served as staff and BMT lead at MLU and the Saskatchewan Stem Cell program for 9 years before relocating to BC. His extracurricular interests include marathon and outrigger canoe racing and ice climbing.
